Lighthouse Animal Shelter

RESOURCES

  • Spaying and neutering your animals not only helps to reduce pet overpopulation, thereby saving lives, but it also reduces health issues which can occur in unfixed pets, including mammory, uterine and testicular cancers. There are many resources available for low cost spay and neuter programs, and financial assistance available for low income families. •  One of the main reasons given when owners want to surrender their companion animals, is that the owner is moving and cannot have pets in their new residence. Our shelter is working to gather information on pet friendly rentals and will post listings here as they become available. For general information and resources on finding pet friendly rentals, please click on the link* below.

  • The vast majority of the dogs that Lighthouse Animal Shelter rescues are mixed breeds, and without DNA testing, we and our veterinary partners are only able to make educated guesses at the types of mixes that they may be. We did want to offer the links* below, so that those looking to adopt can get an idea of some of the traits that different breeds have, including size and personality, when looking to find a good match for their family.  An active family may be thrilled to add a young, Border Collie/Shepherd mix, but that mix is not likely to be a good fit for an older, less active person living in a small apartment.

  • Bringing your newly adopted dog to a trainer is a great way to bond with him or her, and can help in preventing and/or correcting undesired behaviors which could potentially harm you, your dog and your property.  Ask your friends and relatives for their recommendations for trainers, and speak with some of the area’s trainers to find the right fit for you and your dog.  There are many options available.  We have listed only a few.
